The Bering Strait Region Cooperative Extension serves the residents of Nome and 15 Alaska Native villages in the surrounding 36,000 square miles in western Alaska. The majority of the region's population is Inuit (Yupik, St. Lawrence Island Yupik, and Inupiaq) and resides in villages across the Seward Peninsula. Villages are entirely off the road system requiring commercial airline or private charter for the majority of travel, even between villages.
Cooperative Extension rents office space from UAF Northwest Campus in Nome. Outreach includes reindeer husbandry education, animal health and disease, summer camps for youth and adults in natural resources, and workshops in food preservation and traditional Native crafts (introduction to tanning skins into leather, leather stitching, and carving with antler, hoofs and bones).

Field Days is an opportunity for the public to join UAF researchers for a day of learning at our experiment farms! Tour the fields and farms and learn through presentations, tours and discussions about varietal trials, small grains breeding, livestock nutrition, soil health and more!
Farmers, community leaders and the general public are invited to this free educational event at the Fairbanks Experiment Farm, located on the UAF Troth Yeddha&/ces/districts/nome/39; Campus in Fairbanks. Each field day will include a schedule of talks presented by researchers. Please leave your dogs at home.

Whether you have had a bountiful hunting season or found a great sale price at the grocery store, knowing how to best preserve your meat is a great skill to have. In this webinar, UAF Cooperative Extension Service Professor Sarah Lewis will teach participants how to properly preserve meat products so they are safe, shelf-stable, and delicious. She will cover how to prepare different types of meat for preservation using pressure canning, freezing, and drying.
